This article is in the latest issue of the M.O.P.H. magazine..................

" Sometime this year, 2005, the U.S.Postal Service will be issuing four stamps depicting Chesty Puller, LtGen. John A. Lejeune, SgtMaj. Dan Daily and GySgt. John Basilone.. The denomination will be $0.37 with the set being called Distinguished Marines."

These are men, who in my opinion, who had a lot to do with the Corps and its history.

Who said---- They've got us surrounded? Good, this time the ******* s can't get away.

Retreat?? Hell, we're just advancing in a different direction.

None of the aforementioned names made those statements; I know who did, so I'm just gonna sit back and watch the answers! :D

I think it's kewl that the P.O. has honored those Gentlemen with these stamps!

E8,

You are mistaken. Chesty Puller made the first statement at Chosin with the 1st Marine Division.

The second statement was made in WWI in Bella Woods when the Marines came in to relieve the Brits.

I believe this was Gen George Patton some where in WW-2.....

Retreat?? Hell, we're just advancing in a different direction.

This statement was made by Chesty Puller at the Frozen Chosin in Korea......

Tvlr, Bro,

These are some of the quotes attributed to him. Enjoy, they are great.

Lewis B. "Chesty" Puller Quotes
"Paper-work will ruin any military force"
- Lieutenant-General Lewis B. "Chesty" Puller

"You don't hurt 'em if you don't hit 'em."
- Lieutenant-General Lewis B. "Chesty" Puller

When an Army captain asked him for the direction of the line of retreat,
Col Puller called his Tank Commander, gave them the Army position, and ordered:
"If they start to pull back from that line, even one foot, I want you to open fire on them."
Turning to the captain, he replied "Does that answer your question?
We're here to fight." At Koto-ri in Korea
- Chesty Puller at Koto-ri in Korea
(From "Marine: The Life of Chesty Puller" by Burke Davis)

"The mail service has been excellent out here, and in my opinion this is all that the
Air Force has accomplished during the war."
- Chesty Puller in a letter to his wife while in Korea

"Don't forget that you're First Marines! Not all the Communists in hell can overrun you!"
- Chesty Puller motivating his men at Chosin Reservoir

"Our Country won't go on forever, if we stay soft as we are now. There won't
be any AMERICA because some foreign soldiery will invade us and take our
women and breed a hardier race!"
-Lt. Gen. Lewis B. "Chesty" Puller, USMC

"Take me to the Brig. I want to see the "real Marines". "
Major General Chesty Puller, USMC - while on a Battalion inspection.

"We're surrounded. That simplifies the problem."
- Lewis B. "Chesty" Puller, USMC
(I have found three versions of this one)

"All right, they're on our left, they're on our right, they're in front of
us, they're behind us...they can't get away this time"
- Lewis B. "Chesty" Puller, USMC

"They are in front of us, behind us, and we are flanked on both sides by an
enemy that outnumbers us 29:1. They can't get away from us now!"
- Lewis B. "Chesty" Puller, USMC
When the Marines were cut off behind enemy lines and the Army had written
the 1st Marine Division off as being lost because they were surrounded by 22
enemy divisions. The Marines made it out inflicting the highest casualty
ratio on an enemy in history and destroying 7 entire enemy divisions in the
process. An enemy division is 16500+ men while a Marine division is 12500 men.

"They are a damn site better than the U.S. Army, at least we know that they
will be there in the morning."
- Lewis B. "Chesty" Puller
when a journalist asked him about being surrounded by 22. enemy divisions

This is what makes me love the man:

Puller died in 1971 after a long illness. When once asked what his one wish would be, "Chesty" Puller responded, "I would like to see the face of every Marine I served with one last time."

The strip of woods where this fight occured has since been remamed something to the effect of "devil dog woods" You can look this up.

Sorry to repost this, but I am right on this one. I have recited these quotes since I was 10.

blueskies ... you're full of $hit ... I've been seriously doubting your alleged military service as a U.S. Marine for the past several weeks, due to your obvious lack of military knowledge ... unless you're one of those Military Chat Forum Trolls like a certain female who used to show up here.

Gen Creighton W Abrams Jr, US Army was the one who uttered the famous phrase, "They’ve got us surrounded again, the poor b_astard's" It clearly states that on this website:

http://www.bartleby.com/63/8/1208.html

Marine General Oliver Smith, commanding the 1st Marine Division, was the one to state, "We're not retreating. We are just advancing in a different direction." He made that statement under the command of Gen. Douglas MacArthur during the Korean Conflict.

It's not "Bella Woods" - :D - you need to do a Google Search for "Belleau Woods Quotes" and you'll come up with at least these:

http://www.uspharmd.com/usmc/mcquote.htm
http://groups.msn.com/MarineCorpsSnipers/usmctermsandquotes.msnw

You need to search and verify before running your mouth to true Marines who proudly served!

E8MC,

I never wanted to start a pissing contest with you. For the most part, you and I have always had pretty decent dialog. I can not remember a time we have ever had an e-dispute.

I NEVER claimed to be a Marine. You can look thru every post I have ever made---never once do I make that claim.

Sorry for mispelling Belleau Woods--I did get the point across though.

The Marine who made the quote "retreat, hell, we just got here" was Loyd Williams when relieving the French. This section of woods was later renamed-- "Bois de la Brigade des Marines"

Chesty Puller made the quote "they're in front of us........this time those ******* s won't get away" at the Chosin Resevoir before inflicting the most severe enemy kill ratio ever.

I am sure there are many quotes that are similar in nature. Great leaders seem to think alike, but these two quotes are most notably attributed to Puller and Williams.

Have you ever heard the tragic story of Chesty's son?

This is my last post here.

This is my last post here. Those quotes were not part of the original post; so why put them up at all? You didn't bother to acknowledge I was correct with my answers; but since that was your last post here, we'll never see that, will we? Yes, I know about Chesty's son.

E8MC,

I won't leave you hanging, Dude. I agree we should at least finish the discussion.

I did acknowledge your statements as accurate when I said alot of these quotes are similar in nature. The wording is close enough to confuse the orgin--sorry I was not more clear.

The first two posts I made in this thread reffered to the quotes as "first" and "second" because that is the way they are posed in the orginal thread starter. I was too lazy to type them out.

EDIT---I just re-read the original post. You are correct in the second quote. I was the one who jumped the gun--I read the Retreat???? Hell......and I stopped reading after that and assumed it was the quote made by Williams.

On the second quote I stand corrected.

That quote by Williams is great though.
