View Full Version : Official Marine Motto

I had a post on this topic before however too many unrelated comments were posted on it, so I'm re-stating it to give people a clean thread to leave their opinion!
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In the opinions of the *MARINES* on this site, should civilians use the always faithful motto Semper Fi?

I can understand a civilian using it for like support as they would by putting a "support our troops" sticker on their cars or trucks. But we don't let civilians ware the Marine hat or uniform, not just because it would be like impersonating a Marine, but because we know they haven't earned it! But I see nonmilitary personal using it all over this site. It is the official Marine motto. So in other Marines opinions, should it be alright for civilians to use it? Or do you feel it should only be echoed by us?

Think about this one. How can a civilian be faithful if he or she isn't or hasn't yet served!? Do you feel he or she's got to earn it? Best regardes -Steve!

I am not a Marine, yet. I can still offer my opinion, right? I think anyone who has not earned the title of Marine should not use the motto. I never have and never will until I graduate boot.

Hmmm, interesting question. To be crystal clear. I was NOT a Marine, however, considering my work with the Marine Corps I have ALWAYs greeted Marines with Sempre ever since 68. Aside from my status with those I served with, and those that I have associated with since then, I have never felt uncomfortable using the term. Slides right off my tounge.LOL I have always used it as a term of respect and endearment to my Brother Grunts. When I was coming back from RVN on EL the gentleman that "took care" of me was a
USMC Master Gunner. When we got to Frisco International The MG was supposed to show so I could buy him a beer to pay him back for buying my meals in Okie and Hawaii. He had already taken off, but one of the Army types (A REMF) called him a Jarhead. For some odd reason it pissed me off big time. I got in his face and gave him one of my best butt chewings of my short carrer. Dam, it felt so good.LOL Sorry I was never able to repay Master Gunny. I do however always buy a Marine in uniform a drink.

Sempre, Gentlemen.

I am a Marine and always will be if someone wants to greet me with that I am all for it even if they are not a Marine they are showing respect to you and you should accept it that way. Hell I say De Opresso Liber to my SF friends all the time.

Hell No Civilians have NOT earned the RIGHT to use Semper Fidelis as they are Not Marines!!
Being a Marine is a State of MIND, it's a deep feeling of Dedication, it's a Vocation. It's difficult
to describe but it's Good and it's Right, and when deep down in your Heart YOU truely feel that SPIRIT
of SEMPER FIDELIS, you become someone Special. YOU know it, GOD knows it, and everyone
around you knows it. It's a MARINE Thing you know is there in your Heart!!!!!!!!!!

A previous opinion by Kali:

I think most of the Semper salutations I've seen used are by retired Marines....mostly. Also by some becoming or are in the process of becoming a Marine. As for using the "word" .....by civillians; I'm inclined to lean toward the use of it as a means to express a sense of commradre' by those who love the Marines (and all soldiers) and what they stand for! For instance, consider all the families and sweethearts of Marines----what better way to stay connected to your loved one than to avow Semper Fi!!!
I would like to see our nation echo......USA Semper Fidelis!

Would that be weird in your opinions? It would be a wonderful thing to see more Americans as loyal to each other as the brotherhood of the USMC.Why post this one? Read it again, very slowly, and you'll understand my question; especially what we've discussed by email. :D

SKIP, WHAT DO YOU THINK YOU'RE DOING SOLDIER? Is there a reason why you haven't left your opinion!? You've got 5 seconds before you mop up the whole deck with your chin! :D

I am a civilian. I am in an MCJROTC, and i use the term Semper Fi. I think it is all right if a civilian uses it if they understand its hallowed history, but thats just my opinion.

Hey, hey.....since I've been QUOTED (just found out) in this resurrected thread I wanna comment.

I hold fast to the idea of the "sempre fi salutations....for any and all who love liberty!
WHILE those wo serve as marines get an extra measure of respect for their service as a Marine.

Kali,

Let me try to explain the way many of us feel. Sempre Fi is not a " word ". It is a way of life. It is a way of life that throughout this Nations history Marines have trained, fought, bled and died for. Sempre Fi has a very special meaning to us and to those of other services who stood shoulder to shoulder and ate the same mud. ( A62 falls into this catagory ). It is a brotherhood that if you haven't lived it there is no way you could possibly understand it.

I hold fast to the idea of the "sempre fi salutations....for any and all who love liberty!

God Bless America will do just fine

-------sigh---------

when does it end?

My spelling is fine.

My post was to the "gentlemen" on this site....I'm not a part of this "good old boys club" granted...yet I do merit some consideration.
I've served as a WAC and eaten dirt at the hands of the "god ole boys" whilst I served....and I eat the dirt still.

I accept thoughtful criticisms from those who mean well.....none of which applies to you-------
You have bile in your heart....why I don't know....nor care anymore.

One item we MAY agree upon, however, is...if you don't quote me and all references to me I'll not post here in Marine Recon.....not being a part of the good old boys club, (tho Fromer Army like A62) eh?....

Hey, I don't mind being told I'm not welcome....I prefer clear communications!
So.......that being said.....let it be said, loud and clear......but, you have an axe to grind---for whatever reason and don't speak for the majority....or do you and since when?

Never mind.....no reply from you is necessary.

You're right - this "good ol' boys club" happens to fall under the category of "U.S. MARINE RECON"; apparently, you flunked schoolbus by not being able to read and comprehend; perhaps English is a 2nd language for you.

So you served as a WAC -- BFD; all of the Vets here have had the training and experience of sticking someone with a needle and applying bandages; doesn't require much expertise nor intelligence to accomplish such a small task ... you just come here to try and suck up to anyone who will pay attention to you.

I accept thoughtful criticisms from those who mean well.....none of which applies to you-------

Oh, yeah -- your spelling is fine? LOL -- take a very close look at your "(tho Fromer Army like A62)" and tell us again that your "ignert speling" is just fine.

Clear communication is simply this -- this is a U.S. MARINE FORUM -- you didn't serve; so take your whining, suck-*** to some other Forum -- A62 might not have been a Marine; but he's respected and welcomed here, as he's proven his position by his time served with the rest of us in 'Nam.

well, well, well........

That's a NEGATORY!....
As we all know everyone is free to post here....even those right outta highschool, in highschool, etc.! I have a lot more experience than this, not to mention "time in service". Hehehehe....these comments being made to me are obvious to all who read.....pure and simple.

I WILL post to those comments I find interesting. I WILL read posts I find interesting....and so forth and so on. These colors DON'T RUN.....period!

I WILL ONLY STEP-DOWN AT THE REQUEST OF THE OWNER OR MODERATOR OF THIS SITE....PERIOD!

By the way....."anybody" can be/do nursing, eh. SURE, shows what little comprehension you have for my profession! hehehe....so tell me how easy it is to treat an acute burn trauma patient....over the long haul? YOUR Care-Plan on treatment and the implementation thereof would be a sight to see!!! LOL!
C'mere boy, let me show you sumpin'.....just how much fun it is peeling dead flesh from arms, legs and torso's....I'll even let E8 participate....he has lots o' dead flesh above the neck!

Well, maybe you good ole boys won't have to be bored for a while, like it has been. Seems like you only come out to play when you have a "whipping post"!

DEAR GOD! I'm glad you two ain't never got married! The Liberian says I only got 34 more seconds so I'll hurry! Skip, a worthless FYI from me a worthless no good son of a (BAD WORD), the terrorist attacks have been locationly random. There is no front of the lines (currently). And you know the best way to treat a burn is to stick it up and cork the whining! Pelin o' dead skin happens all the time -it's called feet's after effect from a shower!

Skip, bro if you know she has or hasn't served, if you have the truth on your own conscience then let the ship sail, it won't cease the drama on the boards to continually (BAD WORD) her. I just feel it's a waist of your time. I've come too see you as an admirable man, so don't waist your time bro! (shurg) This isn't the kind of peace keeping, LOL. Bro I havn't had time to read that email in my mail box but I'll get to it as soon as I can! Later!

And Steven is the only one around here that retains a sense of humor!!! He's a good sport....even tho a bad judge of character (sometimes).

LOL....Skippy woulda been dead right after the honeymoon!

As for the drama here on Marine Recon...I don't aim to contribute further to it. If anyone wants to go at it then that's what the Jungle is for. I can substantiate ALL my claims but not here....I don't think honest readers need to read the personal attacks on each other.

Skip, you disrespect your own buds when you drag them into your personal dementia. And I think you're certifiably demented.
