It was Sgt. Mike Strank that order th second flag raising the first was done by a smaller flag the second raising the Flag was 96x56 was on a water pipe that they found in the rubble on Iwo Jima.
For more information on this event go to www.iwojima.com there you can see wht these men looked like. The 3 survivors were there for the Iwo Jima Statue in Arlingtin, Va. two of these men are burried there near to where the Staute stands. I have gotton to see this statue last year when I went to D.C. and it's something to see I highley recomend seeing it.
As yopu can guess Jon "Doc" Bradley was a Navy Corpsman that helped raised the Flag with 5 Marines. Ira Hayes was a Native American.
I hope that you don't mind my putting this up but since today marks it's 60th it's worth telling and remembering all those who gave thier lives for us God Bles them all they have my thanks more than they can understand. Also not to forget Joe Rosenthaqls famous picture still use today and Sgt. Bill Genaust who flimed this historic event with a 16mm motion-picture camera. He never got to see this flim he also died not too long after this event. Take care everyone
Jill

Are there any Johnny Cash fans here? Check out his song "Ira Hayes". There is also a pretty good movie---I love black and white classics.

Jill good post. Those were real men unlike today where they cry when they spend 7 months in country!! My grandad was a Marine Captain at Guadalcanal and I tried to be like him for the 8 years I served in the Corps but sadly I couldnt even come close and I have seen alot of action!

ROCK - we've had similar backgrounds; I came from an "almost" all-Marine family, and one of my Uncles was chosen to help raise the flag at Iwo, until he took 7 bullets in the back ... he arrived back in CONUS a year later and lived to be 98; what stories he told me when I was young!

Whoa - Tyrone Power; now that was a Marine ... he was in the same "class" as Chesty and many others!

Nope - the military as a whole isn't what it used to be ... too many whining, crying pussies nowadays!

Ya know what, Sweetheart? Since you're in the Sacramento area -- and, we all know fish-eyed faggots come from that part of CA -- you've pretty well told us alot about you.

However, after reading your childish rants, and especially your profile, you will NEVER make a pimple on a REAL MARINE'S *** based upon what you wrote here in your profile --- "i also can't wait to get the chance to be the best soldier in the best army."

This isn't the Army Forum douche-bag breath -- being around you, I'm sure is about as exciting as having a hemorrhoid attack in the "FRUITS" section of the grocery store.

Now, shut the hell up and get out -- we're all sick of your whining, crying 19-yr old bull$hit ... your Mommy is calling you; and don't bother "Suzy Rottencrotch" (your Sister) ... she doesn't like you either. :D

(SIGH) Lord, Okay champ, I'm going to lay this down simple and clear. Standing from ALL my experience ONLY IGNORANCE will protest against this; so this is where you tell us who you really are!

RESPECT! The number one thing that gets a comrade to watch your back other wise he'd rather see it shot.

Though you may think you're a walking "independent man" you are so small in this world -people won't take the time to look at you. ANY 5 STAR GENERAL WILL PERSONALLY TELL YOU REPECT IS VITIAL TO HIS JOB..even for a private.

You say respect is something that must be earned, you are wrong, it's Trust that must be earned, Respect is acts of your effort showing you deserve to be treated as a humanbeing, a man, a comrade, a Marine!

Ever heard of integrity? ----You've shown us so far that you have no integrity. Do you think integrity is important???

If you think I'm lying then why is everyone against you, huh??? I thought it would have been obvious, but you keep doing it like you're on a mission to say hey I'm tough.

If Respect is sooooooooooo hard for you then COMMING FOR A BTDT MARINE, you'll be absolutely miserable and the Corps is not for you and NOONE will watch your back!!!!!!!!!!!!

But you're young and invincible and noone can brake you so you don't need to show respect right? LOL you said you've set yourself a good start; do yourself a favor and ask every Marine you ever meet if he thinks the same!!

There's a start! But it's better to take responsibility of your actions then run from them, but at least you've respected the request of the people who didn't want your bothersome remarks. I at my most humble remark I'll ever make in my whole bloody life and here it goes...... GOOD LUCK IN TRAINING!

When you think about all the Hollywood people who put their careers on hold to go fight, compared to all the Hollywood prima donas who protest, it's a sad commentary on where we're headed.

Both my parents are Navy Vets (WWII & Korea) and my mom had the honor of meeting the three surviors. On one of our first family visits to Washington, D.C., this was the memorial that brought my parents to tears. I never completely understood that affect until I returned to D.C. and saw The Wall.

Thank you to all who serve...past, present and future.
