Hey guys, about the drown proofing. Swimming 200 meters with your arms and feet tied looks difficult. I tried this, of course not tied but, swimming without hands or feet seperating (that comment had to be put in due to Blueskies obsessive urge to insult anyone not specific enough.) How do you get the propulsion to move foward, I tried the dolphin kick but its not working very well due to me not being underwater. Is there a special technique for this. Thanks for all responces.

McCloud,

When I commented on your other post I was trying to point out that swimming until you passed out was not a good idea and shouldn't be practiced.

As far as swimming with your hands and feet tied--you should use a rubber band that can break easily if you need to. This way you get the sensation of being bound but not dangerously

Thats good info there mc,but no offence waiting till you get to BUD/S to do drown proofing is the best thing. Its not like the first day your there they hog tie ya and throw ya in,and expect you to pass, its all a progression. They will get you comfortable with the water, then when you are comfortable you will learn how to do it and do whatever is best to move yourself in the water ......

Good call blueskies, appreciate it. Disregard my sarcasm, I may have been quick to misjudge your intentions. That is actually a good idea, I had not yet thought of. Thanks to you too, Mike. If anyone knows the dolphin kick though, I'd greatly appreciate any tips on that technique. I don't see anything coming up on the search for it.

Are you sure you arent allowed to be submerged? I dont remember hearing it say you had to keep your head above water or anything like that for the 200m. The dolphin kick is pretty useless if you arent submerged so if you're required to keep your head out of water I would be very suprised. As for dolphin kick technique, just pretend your a fish (seriously), thats what worked for me.

Is the technique side to side with feet together or up and down? I've seen dolphins swim both ways... :\

I know that, I wasen't being literal. Just asking for specifics like, obviously you undulate your body in order to create thrust (mimicing that of a dolphin hence the name) but Im asking for specifics like, do you use hands, go sideways of up and down, and any other helpful tips.

Thats why its called dolphn KICK (kick is the big hint lol)....mc were do you live cause if you were in Ma and wanted to learn I could show ya,but if not its ok....well to get thrust use your hips and abdomin, cause thats your core....keep your head in the water like you do in freestyle, hands in front of your head hands togather like when you kick off the wall .... try that see how it works...Or when you swim underwater insteed of the reg way ( like underwater breast stroke) do the dolphn kick in place of the normal kick....Try that and tell me how it worked, thats if you understood it lol.

I love dolphin kicking with fins when I'm out in the ocean spearfishing trying to catch up to a fish. You go pretty fast, but use up a lot of oxygen.

You'll be completely underwater in between breaths. Lead with your head and move your body like a snake, except up and down instead of side ways.

Any of you break dance? It's like doing the worm backwards, but underwater.

Just FYI, the guy in the vid is using his legs too exclusively. Dolphin kick starts from your chest. Push your chest towards the bottom of the pool and have your body follow. Imagine your swimming under a low pole. Don't get me wrong, you need a powerful kick, but a powerful chest movement is just as, if not more important.
