Hey Brothers,
I am a resent Graduate of MCRD San Diego I was a member of this site before going to Boot Camp and the Future Marine was my name on here which i will be changing soon so now that I got the Future Marine explination out of the way.
The Main reason I am posting this topic I resently had an opertunity to play around with the M-4 and I fell in love with the weapon and I am wanting to purchase one but I noticed that there are alot of differant models out there and I was hoping on some personal feed back from ppl that have used the weapon frequently and I figured this would be a good place to get feed back so if u can help me on finding info and even helping me purchase a weapon it would be great and if u guys cant it is cool but maybe u all can help point me in the right direction.

It completely depends. Auto fire isn't legal, grenade launcher attachments aren't legal. And to wither it's legal depends on what caliber you're looking into.

Call around to your local gun dealers and see if anybody even has any in stock!

P.S. Who's team gotta be taken out for the dinner reward?

Its caliber's too small for deer hunting, it would only qualify for varmint hunting so if you're up for hunting back country varmints; go for it! But I wouldn't use it at a shooting range; its ammunition's too expensive.

I've used that cal before and well, it handles like a gun should. As for hunting I usually go with a .243; never take under 100 grain, the price difference between 100 and 80 grain is too small, but the outcome of damage is significantly different!

Oh and quick word of advice, learn all the suppressors and little features that come with the weapons you shoot! Semper fi

Well me personaly I hunt with a .308 win mag nice little piece my uncle got for me I guess u could say he knows his high power weapons well.

The Main reason I am looking at getting the AR-15 is because I am wanting to get into some compition shooting I scored a 238 on the range and my Instructor and I were talking after graduation about getting into compitition shooting. He said he thought I could do well. so I am wanting to increase my range of differant weapons.

Also to be a little honest I have been in love with the look of the weapon since I first saw one so I am also kinda just wanting to add it to my collection something to take out to the shooting range everyonce and awhile with the guys.

Plus my uncle got mad last time we took his out when I out shot him, so he has been at the range at least every other week putting at least 500 rounds through it needless to say he is very competitive. So that is a little more of the reason I am wanting to get that perticular weapon

Just let him keep shooting those 500rds a week. Any competitive shooter will tell you that you will shoot your barrel out like that. Competitive shooters change rifles more often then you think---i doubt he is shooting moly coated rounds.

As far as buying an AR-15, look into a colt H-bar. H-Bar (heavy barrel) has greater accuracy and better heat dissapation so your shots will be more consistant. Remember the hotter you barrel gets it expands, not to mention the breech heats up causing faster burn time in your rounds pushing the point of impact higher and higher. In combat this effect doesnt matter very much, but in competitive shooting it is the difference between a hit or miss.

500 rounds isn't very much and once every other week isn't very often; at least every weekend and at least 1500 rounds should be sufficient enough; now you see why I was talking about pricing. I am though glad to hear of your covet to increase your skill with multiple weapons.

And blueskies is right; your gun will need a barrel shroud, and clean it well every time after you go shooting. I don't question if you know how to take care of your guns, but that fell in love with it's look comment, I've known pee-shooters that look pretty sweet! Focuse more on what the weapon's capable of. Take care!

Rock,

I understand where your going with this, but compared to some of the other shi^ty topics, this wouldnt make my top 10 list.

At least its not shi^ted up with all the personal "I love/hate you's" that seem to plague every other thread.

Actually it is legal. You can own machine guns and grenade launchers legally. It's called a class 3 license. You have to fill out a form 4 and get your sherriff to sign off. All you need is a lot of cash and some patience. The going rate for a colt M-4 is between $13,000 and $19,000 depending on circumstances. It usually takes about 45 days for the paper work, but up to six months sometimes.

Its the receiver that cost so much. The rest of the rifle is cheap. The receiver is what you fill out the form 4 for.

depends on where you get it. as far as the form 4 goes, you could just have a gun dealer transfer it for you.

Jeremy,

You really dont know what you are talking about. I have bought and sold many Class 3 weapons----and I can tell that you have not. It's really not that important, but all class 3's must be transfered--and the price doesnt really change on the dealer unless you work something out on the transfer fee, which has nothing to do with cost. There are not that many FFL dealers who can also transfer class 3

You need to be 21. You cant have any felonies or domestic violence convictions---it is basically the exact same criteria for owning a hand gun. If you can buy a handgun you can buy an M-60 machine gun.

You have to pay a $200 federal tax fee, and you have to get a signature from a local official (i.e. Sherriff, judge etc.)

There is very extensive background check (between 45 to 180 days)
and these weapons are very expensive. Remember---every machine gun in civilian hands was manufactured before 1986. Only weapons made before 86 can be transfered. The going rate for an M-60 is about $50,000.

Believe it or not, there are 7 M-134 (mini-guns) in civilian hands---the last time I saw one for sale it cost $160,000. That is the cheap part--it burns thru about 100 rds a second

OK now that machine Guns are out of the way kinda. What would u have to do to buy and own a .50 cal rifle.

Was half tempted to purchase a .50 cal rifle the other day for $3,000 on gunbroker.com but thought better of it cause I honestly dont know if I could even own one I would figure a rifle like that would be illegal to own.

I think I will stick to the Colt H-Bar finally got it from my local FFL dealer along with my kimber nice weapon thanks for the advice on that one.

Dude,

If you can buy a .22 rifle then you can buy a .50. Some states have restrictions on what kind of .50 you can own though. I live in Texas, ye hawww, and anything goes.

For the money---Armalite makes a pretty good .50--so does Serbu.

I have an M-82A1(the new model) and a McMillan--both of these are pretty expensive, but they are top of the line.
You can buy surplus ammo for pretty cheap, but it sucks. Barrett also sells some IMI barrett headstamped ammo that is not bad, but if you want match ammo---you are talking about 4 to 8 bucks a shot.
A down side to the .50 is there is not a whole lot of places to shoot it. It is not that fun when your stuck to 100 yards.
The kimber is awsome---I have a TLE custom II and an eclipse--check out wilson combat mags for your kimber. Wilson Combat makes the best 1911 mags.

Well to each is own. I personally love the 45. That is why I bought them. I think all of my handguns, except the revolver I carry is chambered for .45.
