He fellas, I'm new so Howdy (from Texas). I was a 13B stationed in Bragg & a Desert Storm Vet. I've been out for 12 years & now I'm going back in to join the 20th SF Group (NG). They are going to send me to SFAS when they feel that I am ready.

Ok now that formal intro's are out of the way, I have a question about the pace that they run during SFAS.

I got this from USAREC Pam 601-25:

Week 4.

Run 6 miles (fast to moderate 7- to 8-minute mile pace).

Week 5.

Run 3 miles (fast 6- to 7-minute mile pace).

The 6-7 minute pace worries me. I don't think I ran that fast when I was at Bragg. I'm in pretty good shape & I always maxed oout the P/U & S/U's but my runs were in the high 13's. I don't ever remembering running my 2 miles in 12 minutes.

So my question is do they really run you that fast & even though I won't quit, I will fall behind if they start running that fast. Will I get dropped from SFAS for not being able to run that fast?

It would be a good idea to get to a 7 minute pace if you can it would help. To help pick up your pace go to a track any track and run a mile for warmup and then do one mile total, sprinting a lap and then jog a lap, sprint a lap and then jog a lap. This picked up my mile time considerable. If you are going to 20th they will know how to prepare you dont worry.

Yes mate I would do as the other guy said, do run/sprint interval training. Deep breathing static exercices to expand your lungs, and make sure you sugar tolererance is in good shape, run hills, and if possible have a person with you to push you. Remember your dream, go for it mate

Thanks for the advice. I'm curious about what you mean when you mentioned about sugar tolerances. Did you mean cut down on sweets?

Hey Man,

I'll preface this post by saying that I never have been in the military in any capacity, so you can take what I say however you want. I trained with the US Pentathlon team for a year following graduation from college. The five sports in pentathlon are swimming, shooting, horseback riding, fencing, and running. With the large mix of people in the sport (different atheltic backgrounds) alot of the guys had trouble running. What Im getting to is that to imrpove your running to 6-7 min mile pace is doable for almost anyone with the desire. The way that most of the guys got to that point was running long slow distances for 2-3 months before adding speed to their workouts. If you can hold 8-9-10 minute miles for 5-6 miles 2-4 times a week..do it. That long repetition will condition your muscles to the stress it takes to run 6 min miles. Than as your body conditions itself to that pounding you will naturally speed up and find yourself running much faster than you would have thought. I dont know if that helps, but I wanted to be encoraging, because I have seen some crappy runners turn in some fast times after the proper training..
Good Luck
