I am a recent college graduate and I plan on enlisting as an 18x within the next few months. My mind was made up until my friend talked to an officer who is currently active duty(not SF) who told us the biggest mistake he made was to enlist instead of going OCS. He also said that right now it would be easy to get commissioned, then qualify and get a shot at SF training or Ranger training if we wanted. I'm not sure if I believe him and I like the idea of a contract that guarantees you the chance. Aside from the increased salary(which doesnt mean much to me) are there any other advantages to OCS? I also plan on using the college loan repayment program to pay off my college loans. This guy said there are ways to get your college loans paid off if you go OCS instead of enlist. I have never seen anything about this and I'm not sure I believe him.

What do you guys think?

A few months ago I enlisted in the 18x program. A very good decision to say the least. The best I've ever made.
I truly do believe that enlisted men make the best officers. Once you go through a 5 or 6 year tour as enlisted, you should become an officer. In a profession like that, it's best to learn the ropes before you lead. And yes, it is very important to get SF in your contract like I did. As great as it is, the army will jump at the chance to screw someone over, so you need to watch your back. Get it in a contract. And if you go SF you'll get to do ranger training, so all is good.
Oh by the way, I haven't even shipped out yet and i'm e-3 PFC. Talk to your recruiter about that, it's really easy to do, just do some training and get someone else to enlist.

I know that O types who originate from OCS have a harder time making rank, or at least they used to. There is always the WO route. Warrant Officers generally exercise alot more freedom than O types. There usually attached to units and nobody knows how to deal with them, their not enlisted and their not Regular Commision.lol.. There's a WO slot on every team, or at least their used to be. I'm not sure what the requirements are but it would be worth investigating, ,,,,,,Good luck

PS what are the rotc req's maybe you could pursue some post graduate work and go that route. 90 day wonders dont get the respect and consideration,, I went to OCS at Indiana Military Academy in the Guard and my commision wouldnt pass over to active duty.
